Our guiding principles

When was the last time you felt truly comfortable in your home?

We’ve become numb to drafty windows, cold surfaces, temperature fluctuations, humidity, and high energy bills. In return, we’ve become comfortable living in a state of discomfort. The idea of comfort varies from person to person, but we can all agree that at the most basic level being comfortable includes a feeling of relaxation, freedom of worry, and peace of mind.

The path to building the American home has changed dramatically over the last century, and at Kala we believe somewhere along the way we’ve taken a wrong turn. Today’s typical American home prioritizes more square feet, more ceiling height, more architectural flair and more of just about everything except for what really matters.

In the quest for more, homeowners are left with big houses full of cavernous rooms, wasted space, shoddy building materials, and poor craftsmanship. These unhealthy homes are expensive to own and lack the durability and resilience that Kansas City’s relentless climate demands. That doesn't sound comfortable to me.

COMFORT

The typical American home is built with the wrong values. They’re built cheap, fast, and ultimately not meant to last. They begin to fall apart just years after they’re constructed. Windows rot, things break, condensation forms, mold grows, and an unhealthy atmosphere builds.

Your home should amplify the best of your family. It’s a place saturated with memories and the foundation for your future. It’s a reprieve from a world of noise, pollution, and stress. It’s the start and end of every day’s journey.

HEALTH

The traditional American home draws in air, dust, pollution, and pollen through small gaps and cracks in the home’s envelope. Americans typically spend around 90% of their time indoors, yet health is often an overlooked value when building a new home. Make it make sense.

A healthy home is filled with fresh, clean, controlled air. A
healthy home is the product of a myriad of design decisions driven by a single overarching goal - the maximum health and wellness of all who enter it.

DURABILITY

Your time is valuable - time for friends, family, work, play. Time to enjoy, explore, and live comfortably. A home that is built to last, a home built with durability in mind from the beginning, gives back your time so you can spend it as you please. A durable home diminishes the worries of wear and tear creating complications and expenses in your life. Durability means your home is sturdy and reliable. Your home is safe. Take a deep breath of fresh, filtered air.

SUSTAINABILITY

Building a home with the right values from the start results in a home that is sustainable.

Sustainability is the start and end of everything we do at Kala. We create environments where little to no energy is required to maintain comfortable temperatures year round, indoor air quality is controlled and healthy, with impeccable craftsmanship built to outlast the traditional American home.

The result of careful planning, meticulous attention to detail, and elevating building science is a space that is truly something different than you've experienced before.

TL;DR OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

The ultimate luxury is living stress free in a home with perfect temperature, quiet solitude, and vibrant light.

90 percent of your life will be spent indoors. You should spend that time in the healthiest place possible.

A durable home is sturdy, secure, and lasting and gives you more of our most precious resource - time, for family, friends, work, play, or just contemplation.

The modern, American home should support a generous lifestyle while contributing to the health and welfare of its occupants, the planet, and future generations.
